Community union reacts angrily to job losses at Tata Steel Tubes, Corby

110 jobs at risk as Tata Steel announces restructuring of European Tubes business

The union Community, which represents the majority of steel workers in the UK, today reacted angrily to the announcement by Tata Steel Tubes that 110 jobs would go at their Corby site as part of a review of their European tubes business operations.

Tata Steel blame the decision on a prolonged downturn in all European markets for tubes combined with intense competition. 90 jobs will also be affected in the Netherlands. Community point to the depressed state of the UK economy and a lack of policy for manufacturing as a contributory factor. The job losses at Corby account for about 15% of the workforce.

Michael Leahy, General Secretary of Community, said today;

'This is a massive blow for the workforce in Corby who have done everything expected of them to keep the site viable. The impact on the local community and families will be particularly hard. We are arranging an urgent meeting with Tata Steel Tubes to demand assurances there will be no compulsory redundancies and to explore all other options available. We also want a clear commitment from Tata Steel to the long-term security of the site at Corby.'
