Cuts to Teesside reveal urgent need to restart steelmaking

BBC report shows weakness in economy

A BBC report released today reveals the urgent need to restart Teesside steelmaking, claims steel union, Community. Middlesbrough is ranked as the least resilient regional economy in England and one that would be harmed by the government’s planned public sector cuts. The welcome news that Thai Steel company SSI will purchase Teesside Cast Products reinvigorating the steel industry and returning jobs to the area has become all the more important to offset the Government’s cuts agenda.

Community Union General Secretary Michael J Leahy said:

‘The new jobs that SSI will create are a positive development but we hope they won’t be undermined by the ConDem Government’s budget cuts that have increased the chances of a double-dip recession. While Nick Clegg may call this a rebalancing of the economy, the unemployed will call it a scorched earth policy where Northern cuts subsidise Southern spendthrifts.

‘While companies like SSI begin to invest in a future for Teesside, creating good quality and secure jobs, this government will beggar the region and undermine this investment.’
