Prime Minister Gordon Brown
Prime Minister and Community Union member Gordon Brown has officially opened Community’s head quarters in Covent Garden, London. Unveiling a plaque on Tuesday 9th March, the Prime Minister welcomed Community to its new head office after more than 80 years in the King’s Cross area.
Gordon Brown was the first new member of Community Union in 2004 as it was birthed from a merger of the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation (ISTC) and the Union of Knitwear, Footwear and Allied Trades (KFAT). Named after its guiding ethos, community unionism, Gordon Brown praised Community’s dedication to supporting union members at work and at home. This new unionism which sees Trade Unions building links with charities and community organisations to support members in the wider community was widely praised by the Prime Minister as the model for modern 21st century trade unions.
The Prime Minister also discussed his history with the trade union movement and the Workers Educational Association. These links remained strong he declared, continuing to call upon all Trade Unionist to work hard for a fourth term Labour government. Trade Unions have an essential role to play in Britain’s democracy as a counterbalance to non-domiciled millionaires such as Lord Ashcroft.
Attending the function were office staff, representatives of members from across the country, dignitaries including former General Secretary Lord Brookman and Garry Dickinson of Taylor & Emmet, the Yorkshire based solicitors.
