UK Steel giant Corus has begun issuing redundancy notices at Teesside Cast Products (TCP); the recently mothballed North East steel plant says Community Union. This undermines the viability of talks between Corus and any potential buyers.
Community Union General Secretary Michael J. Leahy OBE said:
‘We are concerned we may face the absurd situation of Corus seeking to sell a steel plant with no workforce.
‘As long as there is the possibility of a sale, Corus have a responsibility to the workforce to offer Teesside as a going concern. This means, not only delivering one of the highest quality steel producing plants in Europe but also one of the most skilled and committed workforces in the country.
‘We urge Corus to stop the redundancies while they examine every option to keep Teesside a going concern.’
The National Steel Co-ordinating Committee will meet on March 15th to discuss the progress made by Corus and to consider industrial action if that progress is found to be lacking.
