Antisocial Behavior

Anti-social behaviour plagues the life of those who work in Betting Shops, issues become a daily occurrence making the anticipation of the working day unbearable for some.

Research based on an FOI request to the Met Police shows that the issue has become so bad, people feel the need to report the anti-social behaviour in the shops they work or areas on average 2 and a half times a had, up massively since 2006 - the recent low point. Between 2005 and 2008 the total rocketed by 66% and 2009 levels are already 78% of the total number of incidents just last year.

This massive explosion of reported anti-social behaviour, highlights the increasing difficult situation that those who work in betting shops are having to tolerate.

Community - the Union for Betting Shop workers represents thousands of people who everyday have to go to work in an environment made more difficult by anti-social behaviour. There are a number of issues that make this issue persist and leave staff powerless to respond and take action:

  • single staffing shifts
  • working late into the night
  • faulty bandit boxes

All of these issues increase the fear betting shop works have to operate in. It is time that the industry and local government regulators took these issues more seriously.
