Think21! leads to violence?

I have been verbally abused countless times when asking for ID, we are not paid anywhere near enough and do not get enough company support for this initiative, all we get is more and more pressure heaped upon us.

S. Ladbrokes

Several incidents of abuse and threatening behaviour when customers have not been carrying ID and one incident where a customer stole back the note of his ID because he did not believe we had a right to record it.

Working single manning in shops is now even more unsuitable as many young people get upset and aggressive when asked for I.D.

I have had some bad reactions if I ask a person for ID and he hasn’t got any. I have to ask him to leave the shop, cannot have a bet and can’t play machines. Not a happy person. Who’s in the firing line? Me.

D. Ladbrokes

I had instance like this recently when a customer that I asked for ID from had none, he would not leave the shop and said that I could not touch him and he became abusive, he only left after I told him, I would have to phone the police if he would not leave.

Absolutely fed up of violence, and threats

I work in a shop where if you ask them for ID they stand there and threaten you with violence. When I'm staffed at this shop I will not go to work in my car because the kids that hang around there have already threatened to smash it up. Even one kid threatened that one night he'll be waiting for me. I phoned and reported him to the police but it took nearly another two months before work actually took notice of my complaint and barred him from all shops.

We ask everyone who comes in our shop but we do get a lot of abuse of some customers and their parents.

I. Coral

…when it first started we were getting verbally abused all the time for asking someone’s age…

Anon. William Hill

When single manning one is still expected to have eyes and ears everywhere. As you can imagine this can be pretty impossible. One has to deal with customers placing bets. Loonies shouting at and smashing up machines. And in the middle of all this you have to remonstrate with some aggressive youth as to his age.

H. BetFred

We will be getting mystery customers that look under the age of 21 in the next few weeks we ask everyone for ID and get so much abuse when we talk to the bosses they don’t want to put 21 signs up because they say its like pubs then

Most days you have to ID someone and most days you receive a torrent of abuse. Feel as though the company treat you like a nobody, someone who just fills a seat!!

L. William Hill

I personally am unhappy at additional verbal abuse we are having to take from people who cannot provide ID and are asked to leave the shop.

G. William Hill

I have suffered verbal abuse on several occasions whilst implementing over 21 but feel that I must face this abuse or lose my job

A. Coral

Had loads of abuse, feel constantly under pressure.

L. Coral

we are continuously subject to personal abuse and threats of violence when having to venture into the customer area to challenge potential U21s.

Anon. Ladbrokes

nine out of ten times when we do I’d we get a lot of abuse and in some occasions they can get very angry and violent even though we try to be as discreet as possible.
