Environment Information

Community is committed to a green future for Britain. We believe that there must be a Just Transition to a low carbon economy which supports the development of clean industry.

Below is a message Community has recieved from Ed Milliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

Five months from now, world leaders will be at Copenhagen beginning discussions to get a make-or-break deal on Climate Change.

Today they sit down at the G8 summit in Italy – giving us an opportunity to build momentum towards that historic meeting in Copenhagen.

But combating Climate Change isn’t only about summits and world leaders, it’s about real people affected by huge changes who need to make their voices heard - from the farmer I met in China who’s livelihood is threatened by two expanding deserts closing in on his land to the people in my own constituency who were flooded out of their homes two years ago. While droughts and floods like these cannot always be blamed on climate change, these human tragedies will become more and more common if we fail to act.

We need huge change to help these people – the type of change that historically only happens from the bottom up. That’s why I emailed you about the Copenhagen Pledge two weeks ago.

The pledge has already attracted a huge number of signatories who are now letting me know why a deal at Copenhagen is important to them.

All those who† ve already signed up understand that the build up to the make-or-break summit has to start now – not only through discussions amongst world leaders at the G8, but through grassroots pressure from people around the world.

By securing a real deal at Copenhagen we can tackle climate change, we can ensure that developing countries grow their economies in a sustainable way and we can create new green industries and jobs here in Britain.

By highlighting grassroots voices in the run up to Copenhagen, we can make sure that world leaders understand what people across the world expect of them.
