The Save Our Steel march through Teesside.

Date:Tuesday 7th July

Parliamentary debate held at Westminster.

Community Union General Secretary Michael J. Leahy OBE said;

“This debate highlights the plight of steel workers and their families across the country. Proposed job cuts would cripple steel communities in South Wales, Yorkshire and the North East and undermine the integrity of Britain's manufacturing industry.

"Our concern is that without recognition that steel is a strategic industry, more jobs will go and other sectors like car manufacturing will re-locate and become non-viable in the UK."

"Now is the time for greater action by the government and the Steel Industry before more jobs go. Now is the time to support the workers and to secure the future of steel making in Britain. Our steel industry needs to be fit for the future not fit for the scrap heap.”

Teesside Poet supports Steelworkers from the fourth plinth, Trafalgar Square

More orders for Teesside steel as Save our Steel campaign arrives in the capital

Corus has today announced that it has orders for the threatened Teesside Cast Products (TCP) plant until the end of October, extending the life of the plant for yet another month. The announcement comes on the same day Community union members from TCP descend on London to support Teesside poet Linda Robinson as she reads a ‘Save our Steel’ poem from the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Roy Rickhuss, National Officer for Community Union said:

‘Today’s announcement is another step in the right direction and is testament to the hard work of Teesside steelworkers in making their steel as competitive as possible in today’s market. But while this is good news today, the uncertainty is still there for thousands of workers and the plant still hangs in the balance. Corus must seek out a longer term arrangement to safeguard the future of Teesside steelmaking and the Teesside community.’
