Community Membership Awards
Community members can be nominated for various awards. There are two types of award: awards for meritorious service and for long service.
Meritorious Service Awards
The NEC meets every three months where nominations for Meritorious Service Awards are discussed. The branch secretary puts forward the nominations to the NEC but any member can approach their branch secretary if they feel they or one of their colleagues deserves one of these awards. There are three types of meritorious service awards:
The Confederation Shield
This award is available to Community members from the former-ISTC and the criteria are:
- Service on the former-ISTC Executive Council or the NEC which must include re-election.
- Those members who, in the opinion of the NEC, have been especially active and rendered meritorious service. The member must have served at least 15 active years as an official of the union as well as having at least 20 years membership.
- Those members that held/hold the office of Branch Secretary, President, Vice-President, Works Representative, Joint Committee President, Secretary, District Committee Secretary, President, for 10 accumulative years, subject to a minimum membership qualification of twenty years. This Shield would have inscribed on it 'Branch Officer'.
Applications for these shields will only be considered on the recommendation of the nominee's branch.
No member in this scheme will be entitled to two Shields. However, former-ISTC Executive Council Members, Community NEC Members and Full-Time Officers may have an extra inscription on a Shield at the expense of the union, provided that they also qualify in accordance with i) or ii) above.
Nothing in these rules shall prevent the NEC from awarding a Shield to a member where there are special circumstances prevailing. The award of a Shield under this rule will not constitute a precedent and each case must be individually considered.
The Steelworker Statue
This award is available to Community members with connections to the steel industry who have given outstanding service to the union either as a branch official, EC/NEC member, full time officer or who have enhanced the good name of the union through any other service.
The Community Award
This award, made from crystal, is available to members of Community who have given outstanding service to the union, either as a branch official, EC/NEC member, full time officer or, through any other service, have enhanced the good name of the union.
Long Service
The two long service awards are the Silver badge for 30 years membership and the Gold Badge for 40 years membership.
Nominations for long service awards must be made via the branch secretary. Branch secretaries can make nominations for the awards directly or members can notify branch secretaries when they themselves or one of their colleagues is entitled to one.
