Community was formed by a merger of the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation with KFAT, a textiles union. Before the merger, the ISTC had represented Steel workers since its creation on January 1st 1917, almost 100 years!
Community has a long history of producing results for members in the Steel, Iron and Wire industries. This is due to the understanding of the industry, the strength of membership across the country and the resources available to our members.
Community has a better ratio of fulltime officers to staff than any other union.
Community has also secured a £12 billion guarantee from the Government to protect pensions. Community members in ASW had been left without any of the pension they had earned when their employer went bust. Community led the 5 1/2 year battle for justice.
