The failure of the First Minister to offer any practical solutions to the plight of Glencraft workers this week is a betrayal of a predominately disabled and loyal workforce says the Community Union. The workforce at Glencraft had accepted the SNP/Lib Dem council’s assurances of support earlier in the year and expected to survive the toughest recession in living memory. The Council unilaterally withdrew that support leaving the Glencraft workforce under threat of redundancy.
Despite a visit by the First Minister to the factory this week, 7 months after his initial invitation, the First Minister refused to protect the vulnerable workforce.
Community Union Regional Director Heather Meldrum said:
‘Alex Salmond has a moral obligation to uphold the agreement the SNP/ Lib Dem council made with Glencraft. While it is true that Glencraft and the council are separate legal entities, the governance, core objectives, management, process and strategy have all been driven by the council who this week have admitted their abject failure to protect the positions and livelihoods of Glencraft employees.
Alex Salmond‘s flying visit has proven to be sound and fury signifying nothing. The SNP should hang their heads in shame. The First Minister needs to go back to Holyrood and think long and hard about delivering a practical solution which will keep this factory open.
‘Community will continue to support our members and fight the injustice that they have been faced with. ’
