Community Union calls on Alex Salmond to find a real solution that will keep Glencraft open

Community Union is calling upon First Minister Alex Salmond to offer real solutions for the workers at Glencraft during his visit today. Community Union welcomes this visit by Alex Salmond, albeit having refused previous invitations to view the situation of Glencraft from as early as April.

Community Union is calling upon the First Minister to leave no stone unturned to find a real solution that will keep the Glencraft factory operating.

Community Union Regional Director Heather Meldrum said:

‘Community Union is calling on the First Minister to show real commitment to the workers and to honour the councils’ agreement to support this valuable enterprise. Alex Salmond needs to provide practical solutions to the problems at Glencraft that will keep the enterprise operational.

Our members took the SNP/Lib Dem council at their word and believed that there was an agreement which would see them through the toughest recession in living memory. If the First Minister allows this factory to close, our members will be cast onto the scrap heap regardless of what other empty promises are made.

Glencraft is a valuable social enterprise within the community, not just for offering disabled workers employment and a social network, but also making a contribution to the local and national economy.
