Community sponsors rafting team to raise funds for local cancer appeal


Community has sponsored region 3's race rafting team £150 for taking part Monmouth raft race. The team, 'Oggy's Heroes, (previously know as the 'Pennine Pirates') took an impressive 22nd place out of 81 entries to the race, rowing 4 and a half miles in 8 hours 43 minutes.

The race took place on Sunday 3 September, with teams rowing down the river Wye on the Welsh boarder from Monmouth to Whitebrook.

Says Mark Ambler, a team member and a Corus employee: 'The donation from Community Union is greatly appreciated.'

Oggy's heroes, which is made up from 10 region 3 members plus 4 support crew, has been racing every year for 14 years to raise money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Care Appeal. So far they have raised a total £34,000 for the hospital, which is based in Sheffield.

The last couple of years have seen the race take on further significance as one of the team's crew, David Foster, was treated at Weston Park Hospital. The team have pledged to continue to raise funds in memory of David and changed their team name to David's nickname, 'Oggy'.
