Two winners from region 2 at Community's awards ceremony

Region 2 have a double reason to celebrate after two members won awards at Community's first annual awards ceremony.

The ceremony was held to celebrate members' work and achievements.

The winners are Claire Main who won Young Member of the Year and Denis Tytek who was awarded Branch Officer of the Year.

Claire, 27, works at Coultards UK. She has been a member for seven years and a health and safety rep for two of these. She has been involved in a variety of health and safety activities and conferences

'I was over the moon that I won the award, although my nerves really kicked in when I went to collect it!' says Claire.

'I try to get more young members involved, she says. 'It's not always easy but I think that more young people will become involved in the future as they start to realise what a difference they can make,' she adds.

Denis has been a member for 34 years and worked at the Corus plant in Workington until he was made redundant last August. He was involved in trying to keep the plant open for the past six years.

'Back in 2000 about 166 people were made redundant,' says Denis. 'Since then I have been involved politically trying to keep the branch open, working with MPs and government ministers, but unfortunately it has now been closed.

'I was really surprised when I got the award - it was a complete shock! It was really nice to be nominated, but as far as I'm concerned it's an award for Workington, not just for me. I think it's recognition for all of us in the joint branches.

'I think it's really worthwhile retaining membership of Community even if you're not working. Having the support of a union behind you is important.'

The awards ceremony took place in November. There were five awards in total, the other categories being: Lifelong Learner of the Year, won by Rae Twidale from region 6, Activist of the Year won by Brenda Clarke, also region 6 and Organiser of the Year won by a member in region 8.
