Over a thousand people have shown their support for Glencraft – the embattled supported employment factory in Aberdeen - by signing a petition set up by Community Union. The support comes in the wake of the First Minister’s refusal to safeguard jobs during a visit to the factory yesterday. Glencraft was managing the threat of the recession when the SNP/ Lib Dem council reneged on an agreement to support the firm.
The lack of support for Glencraft has left the company on the brink of administration and threatens the livelihoods of the predominantly disabled workforce.
Community Union Regional Director Heather Meldrum said:
‘Community Union would like to thank everyone who has supported our petition and the Labour MPs and MSPs at the forefront of the campaign. The depth of support is a sharp contrast to the lack of interest shown by the First Minister. The petition is still open and people can add their support by visiting Community Union’s website.
‘After seven months of ignoring the plight of these workers, Alex Salmond has waltzed in with a gladhand and an empty promise but has offered no real solutions and has refused to honour the SNP/Lib Dem council agreement with Glencraft.’
