Employment prospects are a SITE better in Glasgow

NEC member Robert Mooney, along with 12 other Community members have set up a new centre to help visually impaired people train for employment in Glasgow.

Says Robert: '80% of people with a visual impairment are unemployed, and that number isn't decreasing, in fact it is rising.'

Robert and his colleagues wanted to counter this trend, and so set up SITE (Supported Integrated Training for Employment).

SITE is based at Glasgow City Council's Sensory Impaired Unit. It has a team of specialist advisers to help visually impaired people with job hunting, careers advice, training and development and financial assistance for training.

SITE also organises Community events, inviting representatives from local businesses to raise awareness of the sort of issues facing visually impaired people and to help employers understand that they can employ people with visual impairments.

'Soon we hope to have a specialist training facility to enable visually impaired people to set up their own businesses,' adds Robert.
