Amalgamated Society of Steel and Iron Workers
Joined ISTC 1920
Established in 1888 as the Associated Society of Millmen in Glasgow. The name later changed to the United Millmen of Scotland before adopting the title Amalgamated Society of Steel and Iron Workers in 1905.
The union was formed following the success of the Steel Smelters Union and refusal of said union to admit millmen. The disparity of wages between Scotland and the North of England was a constant issue with employers, while different wages and benefits prevented amalgamation until 1920.
Also known as the Scottish Millmen Society, this oranisation joined the ISTC in 1920 with a membership of roughly 9,000. This followed an attempted amalgamation with the Steel Smelters in 1912, which had failed at the ballot box and a number of other fruitless discussions which had begun as early as 1889.
