National Union of Blastfurnacemen

NUB - National Union of Blastfurnacemen, Ore Miners, Coke Workers and Kindred Trades

The Blastfurnacemen were approached to enter the ISTC during the initail discussion in 1917. However, the structure of the Blastfurnacemen was that of a federation of independent districts. The Blastfurnacemen shied away from commiting to the ISTC until their own structure had been reorganised as a national union, which it was under General Secretary P. Walls.

The NUB remained independent, though working seemingly hand-in-glove with the ISTC on national negotiations. Often siding with the ISTC against the general unions. The dimunition of the industry and contracting membership following the 1980 strike saw the NUB consider joining with the ISTC as early as 1980, however numerous set backs delayed the process until 1985, when it was integrated into the ISTC as the Coke and Irn Section (CIS).
