Amalgamated Society of Wire Workers

Amalgamated Society of Wire Workers

Having operated as a skilled craft union since 1842(?), the Amalgamated Wire Drawers’ Society voted to affiliate to the Iron and Steel Confederation in 1920. However this affiliation was terminated in 1924 when modified terms could not be agreed.

The society then operated independently, although changing it’s name to the Amalgamated Society of Wire Drawers and Kindred Trades Workers, until was absorbed into the ISTC as the Wire Workers Section in 1992. Although an approach had been made to the ISC as early as 1981.

In 1992 the society’s membership was around 5,100. The Wire Workers Section was absorbed into the main body of the union in 1995.

The Wire Workers’ General Secretary Matt Ardron was employed as a ISTC National Official.
