Project Olympus

Project Olypus is Community's plan to build a 21st century union

The nature of work in Britain is changing; new jobs and new technologies are being introduced all the time. Even traditional industries are shifting, demanding employees develop new skills and competencies.

Community is a new union with a long history. Formed from a merger of the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation (ISTC) and the National Union of Knitwear, Footwear and Apparel trades (KFAT), Community was created to better serve our current members and to develop ways to grow trade unionism into new areas.

Project Olympus is Community’s strategic plan to adapt to this new environment.

The goal of Project Olympus is to make Community responsive to the individual needs of the member.

The first stage of Project Olympus is to:

  • Setup a Member Service Centre
  • Strengthen the organising department
  • Reorganise the regions
  • Support Communitas
  • Modernise Head Office

The Organising Department

The Organising Department is the engine of your union. When negotiating with employers, the depth of union membership dictates how strong a position the union occupies.

Community currently has more full time officer per member, than any other union.

The Regions

Community has 8 regions spread across the country. To ensure that all regions are operating efficiently, Project Olympus has created four regional directors. These directors are responsible for the strategic direction and efficient operation of two regions each.

Modernising Head office

Project Olympus was the result of a review that found that Community could perform to a higher standard. Project Olympus directed a sustained effort to modernise head office. The results of this are visible in this revamped website and improved communications with the membership.
