Plymouth Council has thrown disabled workers on the scrapheap says Community Union. The transfer of the contract for Community Integrated Services from PLUSS to Milbrook Health Care will not only compromise levels of service but will see the private supplier slash numbers of disabled staff. Community Integrated Service provides much needed mobility services and equipment to the elderly, mobility impaired and Council.
Community Union Deputy General Secretary Joe Mann MBE said:
‘This is absolutely disgraceful behaviour from a council that does not value disabled workers, does not value the services provided and does not care about the local Community.
PLUSS have provided Plymouth Council with sterling service for a number of years, but Plymouth Council have thrown these workers onto the scrapheap. Disabled workers often have difficulty returning to employment after redundancy yet the Council have taken no steps to support these workers.
If this is simply a matter of cost, why has the Conservative council repeatedly refused to open its books and allow a transparent bidding process or independent scrutiny? What does the council have to hide? Would this have happened under a Labour Council?
Community Union is currently seeking legal advice over the actions of the council. Decisions to sack disabled workers should be made in public with full disclosure, not in smoky back rooms.’
