Tribunal rules 40 minutes doesn’t recognise loyal service

Employment Tribunal rules against Glen Shaw Knitwear

Former workers of Glen Shaw Knitwear, Coatbridge, had their day in court Monday. An employment tribunal found in favour of the 57 dismissed workers, judging the actions of Glen Shaw Knitwear to be unfair dismissal and applying the protective award.

Community Union Branch Secretary Alison Ferguson said:

‘It has been an awful time for the workers involved. From splitting the company in two through closing both businesses the workers have struggled to make ends meet. We were aware that management wanted to limit redundancy consultation, but we were given only 40 minutes between being told we’d lost our jobs and being locked out of the factory.

‘It has been through the support of the union as a whole and the dedication of individual officers that allowed us to take this case to the tribunal. Without the invaluable support and advice from our Trade Union, all the workers at Glen Shaw would have been thrown onto the street with no recognition of years of loyal service.’
